What to Expect at Your First Cancer Consultation

The first appointment is mostly information gathering

A first oncology consultation usually reviews your history, examines you, and confirms which tests are still needed before treatment can be planned. A complete plan on day one is uncommon.

Bring a second listener

Consultations after a cancer diagnosis carry a large amount of new information at an emotionally difficult moment. Patients frequently recall only a fraction of what was said.

A family member or trained companion who takes notes gives you an accurate record to revisit at home.

Questions to ask before you leave

Ask for specifics rather than reassurance.

  • What type and stage are we dealing with, as far as is currently known?
  • What is the aim of treatment?
  • What does the treatment schedule look like week by week?
  • Who do I contact between appointments if something changes?
