Heart failure does not mean the heart has stopped
Heart failure describes a heart that cannot pump efficiently enough for the body's needs. Many patients live well for years with the right medication and monitoring.
Warning signs to monitor at home
Daily observation matters more than occasional clinic visits. Ask a family member or companion to help track these if you find it difficult.
- Breathlessness when lying flat or needing extra pillows at night
- Swelling of the ankles, feet or abdomen
- Weight gain of more than two kilograms within three days
- Unusual fatigue with activities that were previously comfortable
- A persistent dry cough, especially at night
When to seek care urgently
Severe breathlessness at rest, chest pain, fainting or confusion require emergency assessment rather than a clinic appointment. Do not drive yourself.
Staying on track with treatment
Heart failure care involves several medications with staged dose increases. Bring your full medication list to every review so adjustments are made on accurate information.
